Comparing Sell Your Gear To Other Methods Of Selling Your Guitar Online

We always want Selling Your Guitar to Rich Tone Music to be as hassle free and easy as possibible. If you are reading this page, however, you are probably looking at all options to find the best way of selling your guitar, and we understand that customers may use, and have tried other methods before using Sell Your Gear.

  1. eBay
The first marketplace to sell your guitar on, that most people will have heard of is eBay. eBay obviously has a huge reach with approximately 17 million UK users logging in each month, though to maximise your potential audience and guitar value, it is likely to you will need to consider listing upgrades, international shipping options to get your listing under the nose of as many people as possible.

Your listing will be up against (potentially) many similar items from around the world so taking detailed images, and writing a detailed, truthful, description with all the correct keywords and titles are important. eBay charges listing fees, final value fees, listing upgrade fees that are relatively high. While there might be promotions from time to time you are probably looking at a minimum of 12% of the selling price, maybe more if you aren't able to fully comply with all their policies.

In comparison, our 2nd Hand Guitar pages have somewhere in the region of 10 million views annually, and growing. People specifically trawl our guitar sections waiting for that perfect guitar to land into stock. Our buyers have a lot of data available to quickly provide a quote when you are looking to sell your guitar, allowing us to move much more quickly than your average private online guitar sale.

eBay require you to use their payment system which normally requires you to go through some kind of trial period, as part of their security systems, before you can get daily disbursement of funds, and can take up to 4 working days. Compared to selling your guitar to Rich Tone Music where payments are normally the same working day, or the next morning if the transaction is right at the back end of the of working day.

eBay also have a raft of customer protection policies in place. While they are great for protecting against genuine issues, private sellers have to provide for returns essentially in the same way as a business woudl do. As such you may find yourself having to deal with the general public for good and bad. Rich Tone Music take all the hassle out of selling your guitar online and handle all that as part of the service. You sell your guitar, get paid, and that is the extent of your involvement.

We always recommend using a reputable courier to ship your guitar when selling online, we use DPD wherever possible. You will need to prove delivery to your end user and having a good courier like DPD taking photos of the guitar being delivered and geo-located can help defend against claims of non-delivery from customers. It does happen, sadly, and you will need to be armed with evidence to provide to eBay should this happen.

  2. Reverb
Reverb is a musical instrument specific online marketplace with around 10 million global monthly visitors, so not as large as eBay but clearly - it's a more focussed audience for selling your guitar, and as such you are probably attracting a more knowledgeable customer base. Reverb does allow customers to check out as a "Guest", compared to eBay which relies more heavily on a 2-way buyer/seller feedback situation - Reverb does not, specifically. You will have to weigh up that aspect over time as while that may be a bit of a risk factor in terms of buyer quality, it also reduces barriers to just clicking and buying your product!

The initial fees are less than eBay too, starting at around 5%, but you have to factor in payment fees either via their payment solution, or Pay Pal at around 3% of final selling price. Reverb do have a specific focus on "Bumping" listings also so that they appear higher in the search results than listings not using the feature. You may find, therefore, that in a relatively competitive field with lots of listings you might need be budgeting more of your final selling price towards fees than you initially thought.

There are seller protections on Reverb, as with eBay where if you can prove delivery - upload tracking numbers etc into their back end system they may step in to protect you in case of claims for non-delivery and loss of goods. Obviously, there is a process that needs to flow for this to be remedied either way.

In terms of payments, Reverb make funds available 1-2 business days after confirmation of delivery (worked out from the tracking details you put into their web site). So given 1-2 days for delivery, another 1-2 days for Reverb to release funds, you are in a similar position to eBay of 4 working days at least. Compared to selling your guitar with Rich Tone Music's Sell Your Gear, where you would get normally the same day, or the next morning at the latest.

  3. Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace has become a popular place to sell your guitar online. Obviously - you need a Facebook account to access the service which may be a barrier for you, and potential customers. Facebook Marketplace does aim more towards a local market, possibly cutting out the need for shipping. There are no fees, but also no guaranteed payment platform or easily enforceable marketplace protection for you as a seller. While having someone coming to collect your item for cash might be a perfect scenario, you are then possibly looking a conducting a transaction from your house, or other place, with an unknown member of the public. So these are all factors you need to consider versus the bigger marketplaces above.

When you sell your guitar with Rich Tone Music, the buyer facing part of the transaction is taken care of, so you are dealing with a business with 20 years of experience in the industry. Once you sell your guitar, and you paid. Your involvement in the process is complete so you don't need to worry about customer returns, sorting delivery/collection, or have any concerns about getting paid.

But What About Part Exchange? And The Relationship?

One of the areas market places such as; eBay, Reverb and Facebook Marketplace can't help you with is unlocking the maximum value in your guitar when looking to trade it in (part exchange) towards another guitar. Our business is made up of thousands, if not, hundreds of thousands of relationships that we have formed over the last 20 plus years of selling guitars.

While we are very happy to help sell your guitar as a one off experience. We hope that you find our Sell Your Gear service to be quick; hassle-free, convenient and friendly, so that you want to sell us your guitar time and time again, recommend it to your friends and consider us for when you want to make your next purchase. With guitar values being strong on the secondary market, your guitar collection might be worth more than you think!

If you are considering buying a new or second hand guitar, we are always happy to quote in part exchange towards another guitar from our ranges. Just let us know what guitar you have to sell and which guitar you are looking to buy and we will always try and provide our very best pricing along with our usual quick and efficient service.

While we say Part Exchange, it implies that there must be a balance to pay towards the item you are buying. But remember, if you sell us your guitar, and it's value is higher than the items you are buying, we will pay YOU the difference. Or indeed - if the item is equal in value - a straight swap is ok. We try to be as flexible as possible to make selling your guitar as easy as possible.
