The Gibson Flying V was first released in 1958. Initially introduced alongside the Gibson Explorer, it featured a unique and radical design that set it apart from more traditional guitar shapes. Although it didn’t gain immediate popularity, the Flying V eventually became a symbol of rock and metal music, thanks to its distinctive aesthetics and powerful sound.

The Gibson Flying V was not commercially successful at its initial launch in 1958. The radical design and shape were ahead of their time, and the guitar did not sell well during its first few years on the market. In fact, only about 100 units were produced in the first year.

However, the Flying V gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s as rock and metal music evolved, thanks in large part to its adoption by influential musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, and later K.K. Downing and James Hetfield. Over time, it became an iconic instrument, leading to various reissues and models being produced by Gibson, which contributed to its success and status in the guitar world. Today, the Flying V is highly sought after by collectors and musicians alike, solidifying its legacy as a classic electric guitar.

The two most sought-after Flying Models are generally the 1958 Korina Flying V. And then the later original 1967 reissues. Only 100 of the original Korina Flying Vs were made in 1958 making them incredibly rare and extremely valuable instruments. Released in the late 1960s, the 1967 reissue model reintroduced the Flying V and featured a more traditional mahogany body and a classic finish. Its association with many famous rock guitarists has made it a sought-after piece.

In 1972 Gibson released the Medallion Flying V to commemorate the 1972 Munich Olympics with a gold medallion on the upper wing of the V with it's serial number engraved. While it may not be as universally recognised as the earlier 1958 Korina Flying V, the Gibson Flying V Medallion holds a special place in the hearts of collectors and can command a premium price on the vintage market.
