JSA Effects "FET Breaker" very early prototype - the Bluesbreaker circuit totally reimagined for the modern guitar world
We all know the Bluesbreaker pedal, and, much like the tube screamer, people tend to either love it or hate it. Even those who love it often have the same criticisms as those who don't; it's too quiet, isn't versatile, is too muddy, too dull, and too low gain
The goal of the "FET Breaker" project was to address all of these issues and create something that brought the Bluesbreaker in to the 21st century. The finished version did that in a number of ways, and addressed all the issues, and along the way there were a plethora of prototypes, each with their own pro's and con's
This particular prototype was the last version before the circuit was totally revamped in to the form that Marcus "Reeves Electro" Reeves says is his favourite overdrive ever
The core of the circuit stayed the same; Bluesbreaker style dual op amp layout, but with zendrive style clipping, a dual gang gain control to fully adjust both gain stages simultaneously, tighter low end, MUCH wider gain sweep (from clean boost to a pretty raunchy drive) simplified tone stack for more treble, huge amount of output volume. The differences to the final version were a jfet input buffer, transistor output boost, and only running at 18v, and of course the quirky landscape layout
At the time, I (the builder) felt this was going to the be the finished product, as I really liked it, but then I discovered the klon style 27v charge pump, and that became an integral part of the circuit
This prototype was hand built by one-man-and-his-cat in the heart of the UK, and is one of only three of these pedals ever made
